Premier League: Fulham - Crystal Palace
Fulham got a lot of positive attention with their comeback from 5-1 down to run Manchester City close in a 5-4 defeat at Craven Cottage on Monday. However, people seem to forget that they lost, conceded five and it might have been 7 or 8 and, on most other days Fulham would have done well to score 1-2 goals at best from an xG of 0.9. At around the same time, Palace were winning 1-0 at Burnley. It was not a classic Eagles road performance but they got the desired result which took them up to 5th place. Their previous away start was a trip to basement club Wolves, ahead of which I touched upon the wonderful year they have had......
They (Wolves) have conceded 18 goals from open play, which is half as many again as anyone else and 14 more than Palace who have given up just four, second to leaders Arsenal. The visitors are 10th, but 5th for goal difference, 3rd for xP and should have scored an additional 7 goals. The Eagles have had a tremendous 2025 , winning the FA Cup, Community Shield, a first venture into Europe and picking up 50 points from 30 EPL games which usually equates to 6th place level and they have played at that and beyond, especially on the road, where they are ideally set up to play. They have scored 2+ goals in 7 of 8 h2h meetings, including the last two at Molineux ( which will never make the short list of best away days!), winning six and a very strong case for Wolves being in worst shape for any of those previous meetings and Palace in their best!
Palace have a good record when making the 16km trip to Craven Cottage, they are unbeaten in 7 visits, scoring 2+ goals in six, winning four, including the two played last season , 0-2 in the league and 0-3 in the FA Cup. The latter was a fantastic performance, elite even and Palace will step off the team bus with very positive memories and they can seal a third win in this stadium this calendar year. The Eagles come in an even better 4th for xP and xGF gives them an additional 8 goals.
