Season of two halves for Chelsea under Maresca.....
May 11, 2025

Premier League: Newcastle United- Chelsea
Results on Saturday could mean that both clubs might accept a draw in this game to remain in the Champions League spots, but I hope that is not the case and that we get both looking for the win. United go to Arsenal next week who might need something and be over their Champions League disappointment by then, so I think it is easier for them to take the three points today, as the Magpies can be defensively vulnerable on the road. They are strong at SJP and should they win this game, only champions Liverpool will have won more at home this season. The crowd drives them forward here and they pose more of a goal threat than the Blues, who have got increasingly defensive minded under Enzo Maresca this season and 62 league goals scored doesn't tell the full story. As 2.31 per game came from their first 16 starts and that has dropped off to 1.31 subsequently, a full goal per game across 19 EPL outings, which is half a season's worth of games. That would equate to 50 for the season and the top 13 teams in 2023/24 all scored more than that and so did another two further down the table, including Luton who will be playing third tier football next season! It is not enough in modern EPL football and highlights why the head coach is under pressure and there was not exactly a riot at Leicester City when it was announced he was leaving after winning the Championship title and there was similar drop off in form at the King Power last season. Anyway, United have won the last three h2h meetings as host and by a combined 7-1 and any value today is with them IMO.
Those of us who have backed them once ( or twice) to finish top 4 do not need to bet, but otherwise 2 units Newcastle United -0.5 ball @ 2.21 asian line.
Good luck!
