This is Milan's game in hand and one they have to win. I set out their similar situation ahead of their trip to Pisa on Friday.....

This feels like quite a big round at the top of Serie A, Napoli host Roma on Sunday and Inter are at home to Juventus tomorrow (with both teams having very important Champions League games in midweek). The last pair could be distracted, but we could also argue that it is more important for Juve to get something out of the league game. Milan can close the gap on Inter to 5 points by winning this evening and have still to "host" their ground sharing neighbour.Milan has no cup distractions at all and they know that Inter has unfinished CL business and that will increasingly come as a distraction. Pisa have won just once all season ( a LOT of draws) and are six points from safety and seemingly booked for an immediate return to Serie B after being surprisingly promoted last season. At home, when the onus is on them to make the running, and that goes double today given their dire position, they have lost 7 times and scored just three goals ( in 12 starts!). As they open up, the goals against column has risen and they have lost at home to Juventus, Sassuolo and Como heavily since Christmas and shipped six at Inter and the visitors (who have scored 3+ goals in 4 of their last six away wins) should continue those trends.

I Rossoneri won 2-1 and made hard work of a game they should have coasted and on another day they would score 3+ goals. Other results last weekend saw the three teams below them in the table all drop points and Milan can open up a gap to those and close in on Inter once again with the win. They are not as strong defensively as the table above suggests and have conceded in 5 of 7 starts, including in a 3-1 win in Como last month, making this a very quick rematch. Como will have felt hard done by with that result, as they were denied by the woodwork and EIGHT saves and "won" xG and all statistical categories of note, comprehensively. Como are a club on the rise and will become an increasingly big player in Serie A, as we have discussed multiple times ,including against Napoli last week in the Coppa Italia where they won on penalties and those notes are produced at the foot of this email. They would move up to 6th with the win and be within three points of a Champions League place. This should be a fun game and easy to see goals once again, with neither team happy with a draw. I am hoping for a Milan win with BTS, but feel a stronger play is .....

2.5 units both teams to score and "over" 2.5 goals @ 2.63 asian line.

Good luck!

Coppa Italia: Napoli- Como (written February 10th)

I "suppose" Napoli will be up for this as they are out of the Champions League and seemingly the title race, but we have been here before with head coach Antonio Conte and his poor record in cup competitions. We have discussed his awful record in the Champions League multiple times this season and he has never won a domestic cup , despite all those Serie A and COTY titles. His team are struggling defensively and have conceded 10 goals in 5 starts and most amongst the top 7 in the league. Coma are an increasingly big player in Italy and the next step for them is some silverware and a European spot. They have lost just once in nine, with 6 wins and a 21-5 goal difference. They are unbeaten in two h2h games and have improved subsequently.

I wrote about all the potential and ambition at Como a couple of times last season .....

It was always going to be a bit of a learning curve for Como back in the top flight for the first time in 21 seasons and with a heck of a roller coaster ride in the interim years. But they must be (fairly) pleased with 13th place and 28 points and their last two games have seen them beat Fiorentina on the road and (then) league leaders Napoli on home soil. However, as good as that reads, they are not your typical small town club just pleased to make up the Serie A numbers and they have much bigger ambitions and in the early season I noted......

Como were playing Serie D football in 2017 after being reformed and were promoted to the top flight last season. They might only have two points on board, but performances have been increasingly strong and they are hugely ambitious. They have very wealthy owners and are not your typical "small" newly promoted team, Cesc Fabregas is head coach, Dennis Wise and Thierry Henry are also involved with the club and in addition to signing a host of talented youngsters this summer, they also added Raphael Varane, Sergi Roberto, Pepe Reina (now 42yo) , Alberton Moreno and Andrea Belotti who bring huge experience and almost all of it with some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Those owners are the richest men in Italy and the playing side is run by Fabregas and Osian Roberts who has been described as the most influential man in Welsh football and who is very well respected. The club spent 70-80m€ in January and an awful lot more on loan and signing fees and of course, salaries. Five of those newbies featured in the win over Napoli .

They are a club we will be following closely in the coming season or two.

Como finished 10th last season which was fantastic, they are 19 points better off than at this stage 12 months ago.  They spent fairly heavily again this summer, a net 100m€  and strengthened again in January and this is a team and club only heading in one direction! Napoli has a crowded treatment room and ready made excuses for Conte, who is never slow to put them forward (little that goes wrong is ever his fault!) and he might not be as motivated as his Como counterpart in any case.
