Bayern are on track to break some long standing records and if they continued at their current pace, they would finish with 92 points (previous Bundesliga record 91 in 2012/13) and score 124 goals, which would blow the current best (101 in 1971-72) out of the water. The Bavarian giants also won the Champions League in 2012/13, so they will see that as a good omen.

This final round before the three week Winter break is traditionally free scoring  and we saw a big return to that last season, it was the first time for some years that there was not either a major disruption (COVID, World Cup) or the calendar year had ended with a midweek fixture and the nine games reverted to the old ways with 37 goals @ 4.11 per game. These matches were often seen as a thank you to the supporters and a desire to send everyone off for Christmas in holiday mood. I think, that as a starting point we should expect goals this round too, which always helps!

The expected numbers through 14 rounds are remarkably close to the actual table, which is very unusual and pretty much every team is "roughly" where they should be, how they got there within games is a little more interesting, for example.....

Borussia Dortmund are the #1 first half team with 33 points and are sensational when the opening 45 minutes comes to a close, with an 11-0 goal difference between the 31st-45th minute, which is as good as you are likely to see in a competitive league. However, after the break they come in at 10th place with just three wins and a 10-10 goal difference. Of course, they will have been defending plenty of leads, but the implication is that perhaps they have gone too timid in the second half.

Stuttgart are the joint best second half team alongside Bayern with 31 points, which is 9 more than anyone else.

Bayern are, as you might expect, very strong late in games and their 16-4 goal difference after the 75th minute is elite. Third best is 6-4 which makes Koln's 11-5 for second place eye-catching.

Hoffenheim and Stuttgart have picked up a Bundesliga high 10 points from losing positions. Augsburg (9 games), Union Berlin (6), Bayer Leverkusen ( 4) and RB Leipzig (3) are all pointless when falling behind in games.

Hamburger SV all but sell out their 57,000 capacity stadium every week and, in a great year, which has seen them return to the Bundesliga for the first time since 2018, they can play their part in seeing the hosts over the line today and the team reward those supporters for that unwavering loyalty. The hosts are also strong when taking the lead (a perfect 4-0-0) and Frankfurt have some issues. They are a bit of a mess defensively, conceding the second most goals in the Bundesliga and 20 on the road is far and away the worst and an enormous number and, to compound that, they have shipped 16 goals ( second most) in the Champions League. The loss of Chaïbi robs them of their top assist provider (6) and the absence of Skhiri( see both above) and the suspension to Arthur Theate means they will be without two of their best defenders in a side who are already conceding for fun!

VfB Stuttgart got back on track following that horror show 5-0 home defeat to Bayern with big wins over Maccabi Tel Aviv (4-1) and Werder Bremen (4-0) and will be looking for the three points that could take them back up into the Champions League spots. They have had a free midweek to prepare, which is rare this season and the goals ......
