Championship:

We had our main outright bet on Norwich City and I feel we have been terribly unlucky with that. They collected just 14 points from their opening TWENTY games and 40 from 19 subsequently and that is title winning level!

Coventry City should go well, they have finished 5-9-5 in the Championship over the last three seasons. They were a penalty shootout away from the EPL in 2023 and were robbed in the semi final by Sunderland last season IMO. They started last season poorly and made the tough decision to sack head coach Mark Robins who was the third longest serving boss in English football and after he had achieved miracles with the club, two promotions, almost a third and an FA Cup semi final. He was replaced by Frank Lampard, we can talk all day about his merits as a head coach and I was critical of his appointment in charge of a relegation haunted Everton as, in 25+ years in football he had almost no experience at that end of the table. But in the Championship he has been in charge of two teams,Derby County and Coventry and took both to the playoffs. The Rams in his only season in charge and at City, he took over when they were 17th after 17 rounds and guided them to fifth and they collected 42 points (which is top 3-4 level) over the second half of the season.

City operate on a relative shoestring, but are well supported (average crowd circa 28k, 5th best last season) and have not sold anyone. Lampard has good contacts in the game and has already made three signings (two loanees) that look decent and he negotiated some eye-catching loan deals whilst at Derby and we can expect more to come in, as they are no restrictions on those in the Championship, like there are in the EPL. Actually, it seems that City made a £5.5m bid to sign one of those new loan deals on a permanent basis, so must have funds to spend on the right player. They are also due a cut of the Viktor Gyokeres transfer from Sporting to Arsenal.

City had the 6th youngest squad in the second tier, Lampard has a good reputation for working with youth and they will all improve for another year at this level. XP placed them third last season with 75 points, behind only Leeds and Burnley and three superior to Sheffield United. I am struggling with any negatives and another top 6 finish awaits.

1.5 units Coventry City to win the Championship @ 13.0 general quote.

Wrexham have served us well in 2026 landing 3 out of 3 bets, all on the road and around those games, played better than results suggested in their other starts this (new) year, see notes on last weekend's game at QPR at the foot of this email, which they won 3-2.

Documents at Companies House have confirmed the North Wales club have received £47.83m via a new share issue.
The figures are from a deal struck last month with American finance group Apollo Sports Capital (ASC) that signalled new investment.
ASC – who are also majority shareholders in Spanish giants Atletico Madrid – have taken a minority shareholding in the Red Dragons believed to be just shy of 10%."

This values the club at circa £500m which seems insane and is 20% higher than Brentford, who are already planning for a 6th season in the EPL (with a stadium paid for and only limited and "soft" debt), when they sold a minority share earlier this season. That just highlights the pulling power that Wrexham have , the media interest in them and business acumen of Ryan Reynolds and partner(s).

It feels like Wrexham have a big game this weekend, as although they are "only" away to Sheffield Wednesday who are League 1 bound and a financial mess and the visitors should win with a degree of comfort, it has more value, as it is the final game played before the January transfer window slams shut and Wrexham are prepared to splash the cash to get into the playoffs and maybe more. On Wednesday, as I type, they have been hinting at up to three big money signings and that will encourage all involved to get these deals done if they move onto 47 points. If they sign even one of the two strikers they are rumoured to be in negotiations with, I think they will finish top 6.

A further sign of how far the club have come in a handful of years is that they will have as many supporters at Hillsborough this weekend ( 4-5 hour round trip) as their average home attendance in 2019-20 (3,705).

3 units Wrexham AFC to finish top 6 @ 4.0-4.33 general quote.

Update:

City are top with a 9 points lead over Middlesbrough, 11 ahead of Ipswich (who have a game in hand). The Sky Blues also have a significantly better goal difference, so are, effectively, 10 and 12 points ahead of the chasing duo.

Wrexham are 7th behind white hot Southampton on goal difference, but only three points adrift of Hull.

City's next two starts are against Derby County, the only other realistic challengers for top 6 and Hull so they could do the Red Dragons a couple of favours. City then play three teams at the foot of the table and the title could be won before they host Wrexham on April 25th which would be ideal. The Welsh club host Saints on April 7.

Coventry currently trade @ 1.05 and Wrexham at a top quote of 2.75.

Good luck!
