Championship: Derby County- Swansea City
We have been doing well with bets based around Derby "always" scoring and ahead of their home game with Ipswich Town last week I wrote ......
This is a very attractive looking fixture. Ipswich might be the best team in the Championship and come out joint top with Coventry for expected numbers, but they are two games without a win and have conceded four goals in that sequence and it is possible that Derby are catching them at the right time. County have been serving us very well and it was hard not to be blown away by their 5-0 win at Bristol City last time out .....
Elsewhere, Derby County (they have been regulars in my notes this month) continue on the rise and could get into the playoff race themselves, however, it is their scoring record that I have been talking about for many weeks and they have now scored in 30 of 32 games and it should be more! When you "always" score in a league as competitive and tough as the Championship, that is half the battle and they will now travel to fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol City for the Sky Friday night game. The hosts have it all in place, good support, wealthy owner committed to Bristol sport ( not just City) and this is the 8th biggest city in the country ( largest never to host EPL football), but they fall short too often, just one playoff spot in ten seasons since returning to the Championship and they have too frequently put together just a good half season and we could be heading for a repeat of that. Their record is not great when they concede a goal, with just two wins in 15 league starts ( 10 defeats) and that doesn't augur well against County. Both to score seems reasonable, but is a shade below my betting minimum, but might be an option for others. Teams that Derby head coach John Eustace has been in charge of have scored in 6 of 7 h2h games with City, 12 goals total.
They would have been on cloud 9 for the journey back and in training sessions all week and hopefully they can carry that onto the pitch today. The Rams are stronger on the road, but odds are huge today to offset that and Pride Park will be jumping . Given that they "always" score we have two great bets and I can make no apology for staking them accordingly......
The bigger stake suggestion won and I am sticking with the game today with Swansea City in town. The visitors got an upbeat write up from me last month .....
Swansea are a lot stronger at the Liberty than they are usually given credit for. Last season, despite finishing 11th, they won 10 home games and were the second highest scorers as hosts outside the top 7. This season, after a slow start, they have won the last four here in South Wales, conceding just a single goal. Head coach Vitor Matos took charge shortly before that run and is a very interesting appointment. Matos joined Jürgen Klopp's staff at Liverpool in October 2019 as the club's elite development coach. He was tasked with developing Liverpool's academy players and helping them adapt to the first team. Matos also assisted with training sessions and game planning for the club's under-23s and first team, with Liverpool winning the Premier League during his first season. He left the club when Klopp departed and last summer took up his first head coaching appointment at Maritimo in Portugal with a 1m€ release cause in his contract. Swansea were "happy" to pay the money, which is not usual at their level, to get the right man and the City website introduced him thus ....
Matos was identified as the standout choice for the role, and was selected for his ability to implement a high-intensity, possession-based style of play.
His appointment continues Swansea’s long record of providing opportunities and backing to ambitious, technically-focused young coaches, and Matos was the outstanding candidate from those the club interviewed during what was a thorough but concise recruitment process.
Swansea City CEO Tom Gorringe, said: “We spoke to a range of candidates and Vitor was the clear stand-out with a cohesive plan of how to take our squad forward and improve.
“Vitor has spent over a decade working at elite clubs, and has been a trusted figure for some of the best coaches operating in the modern game.
“He is committed to playing an attacking brand of football, and to developing players technically and tactically, and we are sure supporters are going to enjoy watching his Swansea City team in action.”
He has a reputation as an innovative thinker and tactician and has so far set up game to game and after doing a LOT of work on opponents (even with a false 9 at times). Looking at City's last 8 games, they have won five (lost 3) and conceded just six goals. The three defeats came away to each of 4th placed Millwall (conceded a 93rd minute winner), Coventry ( matched the leaders statistically) and at 8th placed Stoke where the Swans dominated. Plenty to take from all eight games and they could have gone unbeaten with a little luck. I am not sure who is the more interesting, the Swans or their head coach, but if he stays, they could be worthwhile tracking next off season.
They have taken ten points from five games subsequently, scoring six goals without reply in the last two.
Three weeks ago I further updated with ....
Swansea City signed young Brazilian left winger Gustavo Nunes on loan from Brentford until the end of the season. It feels like a very good move for all involved. Nunes signed as an 18yo from Gremio, where he was already a regular starter and picked up an injury which kept him out for a year almost immediately. He needs game time and will get that at Swansea and will also feel at home, as they have another Brazilian player and two other players and three members of the coaching staff, including the head coach ( whom we have discussed a couple of times this month) are Portuguese. We have not seen a lot of the player at Brentford , but what we have has been good, he is highly thought of and he could be a revelation in the Championship. He trained with City for a few days before signing the loan deal, so should be good to go and hopefully we will see him at Hull this weekend.
Gustavo was not at the back of the queue when confidence was being handed out....."I am very quick and good at 1 on 1's and am here to score lots of goals, create assists and win games".
I have a feeling for City, but they are going to need to score twice to win, so no need to desert the tried and tested.....
2.5 units both teams to score and "over" 2.5 goals @ 2.68 asian line.
Good luck!
